Perhaps you’ve never heard of comedian and writer Jason Pargin, but you may know David Wong, the pseudonym he used for his first book, the 2007 bestseller John Dies at the End. The novel features David Wong himself (as the narrator) and his friend John, two ordinary losers who, after consuming an otherworldly substance at a party years ago, gain the ability to see what no one else can: bizarre, malevolent creatures roaming their small town, causing chaos, death, destruction, madness, and, whenever possible, attempting to trigger the end of the world. The book was a hit, was adapted into a film, and spawned three sequels chronicling the adventures of David, John, and Amy (who becomes David’s girlfriend starting in the second book).
What captivated readers was the deft balance of horror and humor. Pargin could send chills down your spine on one page and have you laughing out loud on the next, which comes with an important advice: avoid reading this book in public unless you’re fine with drawing attention.
If This Book Exists, You Are in the Wrong Universe is the fourth volume in the series and the first published under Pargin’s real name. While humor remains, it’s more subdued here, with a plot leaning heavier into horror, violence, and the development of its heroes and supporting characters.
The main trio, joined by their new ally Joy—a peculiar figure who resembles a famous Asian adult film star but isn’t even human (read the third book for context)—is tasked with investigating a strange toy that’s become a national craze. Unknown to most owners (though some are aware), the toy demands human sacrifices, which, when completed, will pave the way for a terrifying dark entity and a new religion that will—guess what?—bring about the end of the world. To complicate matters (and who wants a simple, straightforward plot in a book like this? No one!), there are also parasites that make people believe they’ve found their soulmate, visits to other universes, time travel, parallel versions of the heroes, and other creepy phenomena. Yet, amid the constant surprises and twists, the most striking revelation might be that the worst monster of all could be someone living in your own home. It could sound like a cliché at first, but Pargin skillfully sidesteps the obvious and delivers something fresh.
The series feels like a blend of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Lovecraftian mythology, with a special focus on its characters. Readers are torn between wanting to be friends with David and company and desperately hoping to never face the horrors that plague their aptly named town of “Undisclosed”, the constant backdrop of their adventures.
Pargin stays busy on social media with videos commenting on pop culture, politics, and other topics, always with a curious and entertaining perspective, even if you don’t agree with everything he says. Like his books, it’s guaranteed fun. Still, let’s hope he treats us to another volume in this amazing series soon.

Quatro contra o fim do mundo
Talvez você nunca tenha ouvido falar do humorista e escritor Jason Pargin, mas conhece David Wong, o pseudônimo com o qual ele escreveu seu primeiro livro, o bestseller John Dies at the End, de 2007. O livro trazia como personagens principais o próprio David Wong – que narra os fatos – e seu amigo John, dois sujeitos normais, em grande parte fracassados na vida que, graças ao consumo de uma substância de outro mundo numa festa anos atrás, conseguem ver o que mais ninguém vê: estranhos seres malignos que transitam pela sua cidadezinha do interior e causam caos, morte, destruição, loucura e, sempre que possível, tentam iniciar o fim do mundo. O livro foi um sucesso, virou filme e rendeu mais três continuações com as aventuras de David, John e Amy (que se torna namorada de David a partir do segundo volume).
O que conquistou os leitores foi o uso equilibrado e muito imaginativo do terror e do humor. Pargin era capaz de fazer o leitor se arrepiar numa página e soltar uma gargalhada alta na próxima, o que leva ao importante conselho de tentar evitar de ler o livro em público para não passar vergonha.
If This Book Exists, You Are in the Wrong Universe é o quarto volume da série e o primeiro em que Pargin passa a assinar com seu próprio nome. Embora o humor ainda esteja presente, aqui ele se apresenta mais discreto, com uma trama que acaba por privilegiar mais o horror, a violência e a caracterização de seus heróis e dos coadjuvantes.
O trio principal e sua nova aliada, a estranha Joy, que parece uma famosa atriz pornográfica oriental, mas na verdade nem humana é (leia o terceiro livro para entender) são chamados a investigar um estranho brinquedo que se tornou coqueluche nacional e que, seus donos não sabem (ou às vezes sabem), exige sacrifícios de partes humanas que, quando completados, irão preparar o mundo para a chegada de um terrível ser das trevas e uma nova religião que vão – adivinhe! – trazer o fim do mundo. Para complicar o cenário (e quem quer uma trama simples e sem complicações num livro como este? Ninguém!) há também parasitas que fazem pessoas acharem que acharam o amor de suas vidas, visitas a outros universos, viagens no tempo, versões paralelas dos heróis e outras coisas assustadoras. Porém, entre as surpresas e reviravoltas constantes, a mais marcante talvez seja a de que o pior monstro de todos pode ser alguém que mora em sua própria casa. Pode parecer um clichê à primeira vista, mas Pargin dribla bem a questão e passa longe do lugar comum.
Toda a série é quase uma mistura de Abbott e Costello Encontram Frankenstein e a mitologia lovecraftiana, com atenção especial aos seus personagens. O leitor fica dividido entre querer ser amigo de David e companhia, por um lado, e por outro deseja nunca ter que enfrentar as coisas que ocorrem na cidade de “Nome Não-Revelado”, o cenário constante das aventuras deles.
Pargin anda bem ocupado nas redes sociais com vídeos em que comenta sobre cultura pop, política e outros assuntos sempre com um ponto de vista curioso e divertido, mesmo se você não concordar com tudo que ele diz. Assim como seus livros, é diversão garantida. Mesmo assim, vamos torcer que ele nos presenteie em breve com mais um volume de sua excelente série.
