A hilarious series about the behind-the-scenes of a fictional movie studio

In 2024, HBO released the series The Franchise, about the chaos behind the scenes during the production of a superhero movie series. Everything that series (canceled after a single season) aspired to be is what Lionsgate managed to achieve with The Studio, whose first season has just aired on Apple TV+.
Seth Rogen plays Matt Remick, an executive at Continental, a traditional Hollywood studio. Genuinely passionate about cinema and somewhat of a dreamer, he is chosen to be the head of the studio, responsible for approving and overseeing projects. But what seems like the perfect job—the chance to produce important and relevant films by “serious” directors—quickly reveals itself to be more about pushing forward idiotic commercial projects like Kool Aid: The Movie.
It’s a comedy of errors, with the bumbling Matt facing a different situation each episode. In one, he completely derails a day of shooting for a prestigious production. In another, inspired by film noir, he investigates the disappearance of a film reel from an ongoing production. One of the best episodes takes place at the Golden Globe awards, where Matt causes all sorts of trouble while trying to convince a documentary director to mention him in her acceptance speech.
Matt is supported by a few noteworthy sidekicks, like the equally clumsy Sal (the excellent Ike Barinholtz), his friend and studio executive; Maya (Kathryn Hahn), Continental’s marketing director; Quinn (Chase Sui Wonders), a junior executive full of opinions; and the veteran Patty Leigh (Catherine O’Hara), the former studio head turned neurotic producer. Helping at times and hindering at others is Griffin Mill (Bryan Cranston, of Breaking Bad), the studio president with a very commercial view of the film world.
It’s a series suitable for anyone, thanks to its jokes and cringe-worthy situations, but it will be best enjoyed by those who love Hollywood’s behind-the-scenes and are familiar with the filmographies of directors like Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard, for example. In fact, many Hollywood celebrities appear in the series, playing sad and less than nice versions of themselves.
A pleasant surprise, even if you, like me, usually don’t have much patience for Seth Rogen. Now let’s hope the second season is as good as this one.

THE STUDIO: PRIMEIRA TEMPORADA (Crítica)
Um seriado hilariante sobre os bastidores de um estúdio de cinema fictício
Em 2024, a HBO lançou a série A Franquia, sobre as confusões por trás das câmeras durante a produção dos filmes de uma série de super-heróis. Tudo que essa série (cancelada após uma única temporada) gostaria de ser é o que a Lionsgate conseguiu realizar com The Studio, cuja primeira temporada acaba de ser exibida pela Apple TV+.
Seth Rogen é Matt Remick, um executivo do Continental, um estúdio tradicional de Hollywood. Verdadeiramente apaixonado por cinema e um tanto sonhador, ele é escolhido para ser o chefe do estúdio, responsável por aprovar e supervisionar projetos. Mas o que parece ser o emprego perfeito – a possibilidade de produzir filmes importantes e relevantes de diretores “sérios” – logo mostra que a função tem mais a ver com levar adiante projetos comerciais de natureza idiótica como Kisuco: O Filme.
É uma comédia de erros, com o atrapalhado Matt em uma situação diferente a cada episódio. Em um, ele consegue atrapalhar completamente um dia de filmagem de uma produção de prestígio. Em outro, inspirado pelos filmes noir, ele investiga o desaparecimento de um rolo de filme em uma produção em andamento. Um dos melhores episódios se passa na entrega dos prêmios Golden Globe, onde Matt arma diversas confusões ao tentar convencer a diretora de um documentário a citá-lo no discurso de agradecimento.
Matt é auxiliado por alguns escudeiros dignos de nota, como o também atrapalhado Sal (o ótimo Ike Barinholtz), seu amigo e executivo do estúdio; Maya (Kathryn Hahn), a diretora de marketing do Continental; Quinn (Chase Sui Wonders), uma executiva júnior cheia de opiniões; e a veterana Patty Leigh (Catherine O’Hara), ex-chefe do estúdio e hoje produtora neurótica. Ora ajudando, ora atrapalhando está Griffin Mill (Bryan Cranston, de Breaking Bad), o presidente do estúdio com uma visão muito comercial sobre o mundo do cinema.
É um seriado indicado para qualquer um, pelas piadas e situações constrangedoras, mas vai ser melhor aproveitado por quem gosta dos bastidores de Hollywood e conhece as filmografias de cineastas como Martin Scorsese e Ron Howard, por exemplo. Aliás, muitas celebridades de Hollywood participam no seriado, interpretando versões tristes e pouco simpáticas de si próprios.
Uma boa surpresa mesmo se você, como eu, geralmente não tem paciência para Seth Rogen. Agora vamos torcer para que a segunda temporada seja tão boa quanto esta.
