DC Comics’ series updating Will Eisner’s Spirit, released in 2008, remains a lot of fun. After two initial volumes mostly written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke, the third book (covering issues 14 to 20) brings some exciting surprises in the creative team.
The biggest surprise might be the presence of Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier in the scripts, the duo known for writing the famous humorous adventures of the bumbling barbarian Groo. The authors avoid going overboard with slapstick humor, but their inherent wit is evident in the plots and situations they create. In one story, the Spirit investigates a series of doctors’ murders with a backstory that’s somewhat dark. In another, he travels to Paris to solve a case involving diamonds and a beauty pageant—much to the chagrin of his love interest, Helen Dolan. In yet another, the hero must pose as a stuntman in a Hollywood studio, ending up dressed as Zorro. One of the best stories places the Spirit on a cruise ship where an accidental death may, in the end, have been intentional. These and other adventures are all well-crafted, with mysteries that keep the reader engaged until their resolutions.
Another surprise is the artwork, handled by some unexpected names who perform admirably. Paul Smith, known for X-Men and Justice Society: The Golden Age, works with a stylized line that mimics Eisner’s. Another standout in the edition is veteran Mike Ploog, who in the 1970s worked on Ghost Rider, The Monster of Frankenstein, and Werewolf by Night, Marvel’s horror series. Finally, in two stories, we have the art of Brazilian Aluir Amancio, a talented and dynamic artist who worked on Bruce Timm’s animations for Warner.
The Spirit seems to truly inspire the best in the artists and writers who work on it.

O terceiro volume da série da DC traz a equipe de Groo, o errante, nos roteiros
A série da DC Comics com a atualização do Spirit de Will Eisner, lançada em 2008, continua muito divertida. Após dois volumes iniciais com roteiros e desenhos majoritariamente de Darwyn Cooke, o terceiro livro (com as edições 14 a 20) apresenta algumas boas surpresas na equipe criativa.
A maior dessas surpresas talvez seja a presença nos roteiros de Sergio Aragonés e Mark Evanier, a dupla que escreve as famosas aventuras cômicas do bárbaro atrapalhado Groo. Os autores evitam partir para o pastelão desenfreado, mas fica óbvio seu humor inerente nas tramas e situações que criam. Em uma das histórias, o Spirit investiga uma série de assassinatos de médicos com uma subtrama pregressa até um tanto sombria. Em outra, vai a Paris para resolver um caso que envolve diamantes e um concurso de beleza – para o incômodo de sua pretendente, Helen Dolan. Em outra ainda, o herói precisa se passar por um dublê dentro de um estúdio de Hollywood e acaba fantasiado de “Zorro”. Uma das melhores histórias coloca o Spirit dentro de um cruzeiro marítimo em que acontece uma morte acidental que, no final das contas, pode ter sido proposital. Essas e outras aventuras são todas bem conduzidas, com mistérios que deixam o leitor interessado até suas resoluções.
Outra surpresa é a arte, a cargo de alguns nomes que não esperaríamos ver num gibi do Spirit, mas que saem-se muito bem. Paul Smith, desenhista dos X-Men e de Sociedade da Justiça: A Era de Ouro, trabalhando com um traço estilizado que imita o de Eisner. Outro destaque na edição é o veterano Mike Ploog, que nos anos 1970 trabalhou em Motoqueiro Fantasma, O Monstro de Frankenstein e O Lobisomem, séries de terror da Marvel. Finalmente, em duas histórias, temos a arte do brasileiro Aluir Amancio, um desenhista talentoso e de traço dinâmico que trabalhou nas animações de Bruce Timm para a Warner.
O Spirit parece mesmo inspirar o melhor dos artistas e roteiristas que trabalham com ele.
