The most different and bloody superhero story you’ve ever seen

Every comic book reader has already read Marvel or DC superhero comics and knows their characters, but maybe – like many – is abandoning these publishers because, honestly, it’s getting hard to find good stories from both.
What’s the alternative? I don’t know about you, but for me, it’s looking for comics from independent publishers. Yes, most of them don’t release superheroes… but, man, when they do, they sometimes hit the mark with flying colors! An example is the fantastic Luther Strode: The Complete Edition, a 544-page volume that compiles the miniseries The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, The Legend of Luther Strode, and The Legacy of Luther Strode, all of them released between 2012 and 2016 by Image Comics.
You’ve almost seen this story before. Luther, a normal, skinny, and shy young man, orders one of those crazy bodybuilding manuals by mail to try to gain muscles and stop being the favorite victim of all the school bullies – and if he can conquer his classmate Petra, whom he admires from afar, even better. What he didn’t expect was that the training methods taught in the manual would take effect so quickly and that he would gain superhuman strength. Now he can face the tough guys at school, wins over his beloved, and even to prevent a robbery at the local supermarket. Everything seems like a dream, and he even adopts a mask to start patrolling the city’s streets.
But that’s when things deviate from the norm of regular superhero comics. Soon, a mysterious man starts killing everyone Luther has had contact with, until he confronts the young man himself and tries to persuade him to join his mysterious secret organization, which has been keeping terrible secrets since time immemorial. What follows are several of the more extremely violent, bloody, and impressive confrontations that you’ve probably ever seen in a superhero comic. Luther needs to use all his newly acquired talents to face a legion of increasingly dangerous enemies who want to use him as a pawn or, if that’s impossible, end his life.
It’s easy to notice the love of writer Justin Jordan and artist Tradd Moore for the most popular genre of American comics and, even more, their excitement in creating a saga that at the same time pays homage to classic superhero stories and subverts them. With each chapter, the action becomes more extreme, more thrilling, more surprising. It’s possible to complain that the characters don’t have great psychological depth or that their personal characteristics aren’t that well explored. But, in truth, none of that matters because the intention is to tell the most intense superhero story possible, with over the top action. And, with the help of the excellent Brazilian colorist Felipe Sobreiro, they achieve their goal in an exemplary manner.
What really matters, in the end, is the big scope of this adventure and that it overflows with talent and energy. It should be read by everyone who complains about the quality of current superhero comics.

A história de super-heróis mais diferente e sanguinária que você já viu
Todo leitor de quadrinhos já leu gibis de super-heróis da Marvel ou da DC e conhece seus personagens, mas talvez – como muitos – esteja abandonando essas editoras porque, sinceramente, anda difícil achar boas histórias de ambas.
Qual a opção? Não sei pra vocês, mas pra mim é procurar os quadrinhos das editoras independentes do mercado. Sim, a maior parte delas não lança super-heróis… mas, rapaz, quando lançam conseguem acertar em cheio às vezes! Um exemplo é o fantástico Luther Strode: The Complete Edition, uma edição de 544 páginas que compila as minisséries The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, The Legend of Luther Strode e The Legacy of Luther Strode, lançadas entre 2012 e 2016 pela Image Comics.
Você já quase viu essa história antes. Luther, um rapaz normal, franzino e tímido, pede pelo correio um desses manuais malucos de halterofilistas para tentar ganhar músculos e deixar de ser a vítima favorita de todos os valentões da escola – e se der pra conquistar a colega Petra, que ele admira à distância, melhor ainda. O que não o rapaz não esperava era que os resultados dos treinamentos ensinados no manual apareceriam tão depressa e que ele se tornaria dono de uma força sobre-humana. Ele consegue enfrentar os mal-encarados do colégio, conquista sua amada e até impede um assalto no supermercado local. Tudo parece um sonho e ele até adota uma máscara para começar a patrulhar as ruas da cidade.
Mas é aí que as coisas fogem da norma dos gibis normais de super-heróis. Logo, um homem misterioso passar a matar todos aqueles com quem Luther teve contato, até que confronta o próprio rapaz e tenta persuadi-lo a fazer parte de sua misteriosa organização secreta, que guarda terríveis segredos desde tempos imemoriais. O que se segue são vários confrontos extremamente violentos, sangrentos e mais impressionantes que qualquer coisa que você provavelmente já viu em um gibi de super-heróis. Luther precisa usar todos os seus talentos recém-adquiridos para enfrentar uma legião de inimigos, cada vez mais perigosos, que querem usá-lo como peão ou, se isso for impossível, acabar com sua vida.
É fácil notar o amor do desenhista Justin Jordan e do desenhista Tradd Moore pelo gênero mais popular dos quadrinhos americanos e, mais ainda, sua empolgação em criar uma saga que ao mesmo tempo homenageia as histórias clássicas de super-heróis e as subverte. A cada capítulo, a ação se torna mais extrema, mais alucinante, mais surpreendente. É possível reclamar que os personagens não têm grande aprofundamento psicológico ou que suas características pessoais não são bem exploradas. Mas, na verdade, nada disso importa pois a intenção é contar a mais intensa história de super-heróis possível, com ação desenfreada. E, com a ajuda do excelente colorista brasileiro Felipe Sobreiro, conseguem seu intento de maneira exemplar.
O que importa mesmo é o escopo grandioso dessa aventura que transborda talento e energia, que deveria ser lida por todo mundo que reclama da qualidade dos gibis de super-heróis atuais.
